June 9 Game – Fergus Highlanders 3 trys to Crusader Knights 1 try

Week three of games for the Knights was a big improvement. Despite Fergus showing up with eight players we managed to lend them three players and played 11 aside. Thanks Kieran, Thomas and Griffin for stepping up to play against the Knights.

Overall tackling was much better this week. Great open field tackling by Bailey in his first ever Rugby game. Lots of support tackling throughout the game by Dominic, Nicolas, Luke and Oscar in the backfield and Callahan, Ethan and Darren against a much bigger Fergus pack. It is great to see the front row starting to see the importance of pushing together in scrums, being there in support in rucks and mauls and fighting for possession. When the front row held their own in lose play during the second half it led to three to four 40+ meter runs by our backs. Our only try started off with a broken play just inside our 22 that we regained the ball and after 2-3 passes Luke ran it in 60 meters after avoiding many tackles. The last five minutes we outplayed them and just could push over for a try with 3-4 attempts to tie it up 2-2. Fergus ran the ball back with a minute left in the game that finished the score 3-1.

More work on clean passing, lower tackling (vs pushing) in rucks and fighting hard for loose ball possession will be the continued focus at practice as we prepare for games against Brantford and Waterloo in Brantford this weekend.

Keep up the great effort it is starting to pay off.

U14 Archers

June 9 – Game one:  Burlington 59 – 0 U14 Cru Archers

The U14 Cru Archers travelled to local rivals Burlington for an early 8.30am kick off at Sherwood Forest Park.

The Cru players enjoyed an energetic warm up, then positions and starting lines were communicated to the team and in driving rain the CRU Archers team proudly took to the pitch.

It proved to be a difficult game, the larger set of Burlington forwards and backs! broke through our defensive lines and scored 11 try’s converting two of them.

The players never gave up and we saw some great tackles from the backs in open field and especially around the rucks and malls from the forwards in the second half.

Some of our last line defending and big tackles did contribute to some player injuries, can report that all players are recovering and the CRU team spirit remained unbroken.

Game two: Combined Oakville and Burlington team (BurlOak) 7 – 87 The Petersfield School, Petersfield, England

In the true spirit of rugby, we completed fiercely against our local Burlington rivals in the first game and then proceeded to combine players into a joint team to face a touring school from England in the second game.

English School touring teams play a high standard of rugby and St Petersfield blended size, power, skill, straight running and support play to overpower the ‘BurlOak’ team quite convincingly.

BurlOak did score a great try of their own under the posts after strong running and support play.

The final whistle blew, handshakes and a player tunnel was then followed by hamburgers, pop and socializing for all of the players from all three teams.

The Coaches and teachers discussed key tactical issues over beer, thank you speeches followed and the School provided both clubs with a Canada 2012 Tour pennant.

A special thanks to David Haslam for bringing his ‘just in case’  referee outfit and for officiating both  games.

June 2, 2012, U14 knights

A great effort by the Knights on Saturday. This was the first league game of the year with tough opponents. Despite not being able to put a try on the board the boys never gave up (1st game 7-0 for Burlington and 2nd game 9-0 for Brantford).

To put into perspective of playing Burlington and Brantford on the first week of games… both of these teams played in the top Blue loop last year and most of the players were 1998s playing their second year at U14.

The Knight’s tackling and supporting the ball carrier improved in the second game. The forwards are starting to understand the importance of going forward in support is the critical link in keeping possession of the ball after a scrum or ruck. The backs are also starting to see that moving forward together on defense stops the offensive momentum of running through gaps and scoring. We had better tackling in the second game by many players and we had a few opportunities to score with a couple good runs by the backs.

This is a team game in which possession of the ball is king. Good tackling leads to turnovers and cleaning up the ball after the ruck will continue to improve over the next month at practice.

Archers

U14 Archers

Archers 7 –Burlington42

The Crusader Archers played a tough fought match againstBurlingtonlast Saturday at Oakville Crusaders.

Despite the last game result againstBurlington59 – Archers 0, we had a tremendous start, pushing the visiting team on their 22 meters during the first 15 minutes of the game, proving that when we play as a team we can achieve great results.

After a few attempts at scoring a try,Burlingtonbroke through our defensive line and scored their first try.

From that moment we lost concentration and allowedBurlingtonto show us their experience playing 15 aside.

During the second half, a great push in the scrum, gave us a clean ball to implement what we had practiced during last practice. Julian looped with Ruaridh giving the ball to Scott already on a full speed run, broke away and after being stopped by three players, Arthur picked up the ball giving continuity to the previous played and made a 30 meters run to score our first and only try.

There were some strong runs and tackles but overall team play must still be developed. Positional play and strength in rucks, mauls and scrums still needs some work but overall improvement is quite noticeable from previous games. Other than an unfortunate injury to our scrum-half, Will, the game was enjoyable and the Archers are eager to get back to work and prepare for the next match.

Man of the Match: Arthur Glenn – Arthur never gave up tackling and continuously attacking every time we had the ball to play.

Knights

U14 Knights

Knights traveled east on Saturday toBalmyBeachwhere they played Aurora Barbarians andBalmyBeachin two 30 minute games. The boys played their hearts out in two very close matches with the best balanced competitive games to date.  All games were refereed with uncontested scrums and line outs saw all teams able to get the ball out to the backs cleanly.

The Knights vs Barbs game, the boys were victorious with a 15 – 5 result. Tackling and ball handling was great. Scrum play was clean (uncontested) as the ball moved out to the wing quickly. Bailey was able to run through and break 2-3 tackles on his way to run 40+ meters resulting in two of the trys. The Barbs threatened a few times with a couple broken tackles and a 30+ meter run just to see our backs (Griffin) tackle and win back the ball inside our 22 meter line. The biggest success came from our rucks and mauls being their in numbers to win and support the ball. Despite Barbs having a larger pack we were able to contain most forward runs by tackling low and pushing in numbers for most of the rucks. The big play happened near the end of the 1st half  when we threatened again with great cut back runs by the backs over three phases of rucks and runs to get us the the 10 meter line. At least eight players had a run with the ball as we pushed closer and closer to the try line when …  Darren found himself out with the backs and with ball in hand. He saw space broke a tackle and drove over the line for a try. Great 2nd and 3rd phase effort by all.

The third game Knights vs Beach result was a tie 5-5.

With a few adjustments by both teams from the previous two games, the 99s backs got a chance to have more ball and play time. Knights only try came after quick ball got out to Oscar on the blind side inside our 50 meter were he broke two tackle then put on the jets running 50 meters avoiding a couple more tackles and touched the ball down for a try. Knights had lots of possession of ball and many opportunities to put points on the board with great running and passing but we just couldn’t finish it at times. Nicholas,Griffin, Adam and Oscar supported the play all day with great tackling, passing and running gains. It came down to the last play of the game were Beach tied it up after 2 + minutes of holding them with back and forth rucks mauls, line outs and scrums inside our 22 meter line.  Great tackling by Matthew, Aidan, Daniel and the forwards held them on our 5 meter line. A great effort by Cru Knights.

We are starting to play as a team and doing the little things right (tackling and passing). Decision making on the field is picking up and we are starting to see space and options to move the ball quicker.

Congratulations Knights for a job well done.

Lancers

U14 Lancers

Lancers 49Mississauga0

On a perfect Saturday morning the Lancers got to play at home after two games on the road. Against a goodMississaugateam they played a good game of rugby, and scored early and often. The scrum was solid, and when they got the ball out to the backs the passes were quick and smooth, followed up with some hard running. The Lancer Coaches was pleased with the effort, but did see some areas in need of work. One never likes to see any team steamrolled, but playing hard for the entire game is something our Coaches want to instill in our players. For the fans it was a most enjoyable game to watch.
